Sinopsis:

Learning is commonly treated as the principal endpoint of education. Yet the fact that a person has learned does not by itself establish what that learning can later support. BEYOND LEARNING examines the educational journey from acquired knowledge and capability toward judgement, adaptation, purposeful action, and human agency. Rather than opposing learning to broader educational purposes, the book asks what learning must become if it is to remain consequential when familiar conditions change.
Across thirteen chapters, the book develops an integrative conceptual architecture linking learning, availability, mobilisation, recontextualisation, adaptation, capability, judgement, purposeful action, and agency. It distinguishes performance from learning, capability from isolated competence, judgement from decision-making, and agency from independence. Particular attention is given to the relational conditions through which capability is enacted and to the growing role of technological systems in redistributing cognitive and judgemental work.
The central argument is that learning acquires fuller educational significance as learners become less narrowly dependent on the original conditions of acquisition and increasingly able to mobilise and adapt what they know, judge what is relevant and worthwhile, and act with meaningful authorship and responsibility. Human agency is therefore not presented as self-sufficiency, but as governed participation within changing social, institutional, material, and technological conditions.
Written for students, educators, researchers, and scholars of educational theory, the book offers a vocabulary for thinking beyond attainment without diminishing the importance of knowledge. Its ultimate concern is what education should make possible in a human life: the capacity to govern what one knows and can do in relation to purposes, others, changing conditions, and the consequences of action.
