Sinopsis:
Did you know that in some coastal regions, shorelines can retreat by more than ten meters each year due to erosion? In certain peat-dominated coastal environments along major maritime corridors, fragile soils and constant wave action create conditions where coastlines gradually disappear year after year. In such landscapes, large portions of the shoreline can be lost annually, highlighting the urgent need for coastal protection strategies that rely not only on engineered structures but also on the resilience of natural ecosystems.
This book introduces the concept of building with nature through the integration of detached breakwaters and mangrove rehabilitation as a comprehensive coastal protection approach. Detached breakwaters are capable of reducing wave energy while simultaneously creating calmer waters that support the growth of coastal vegetation. Three types of mangroves—Rhizophora, Avicennia, and Nipah—are discussed for their important roles in slowing coastal erosion, with Nipah showing particularly
